چکیده
OBJECTIVE Evaluating the efficacy of two pyrethroid insecticides on Aedes aegypti, thereby providing useful information for decision-making in controlling dengue. METHODS The effect on A. aegypti of ultra low volume (ULV) highcis-Permethrin (Depe) and ss-cypermethrin pyrethroids in a smoke-generating formulation (Bolate) was evaluated in 16 blocks in the town of Puerto Leguizamo, Putumayo, between July and December 2004. Their efficacy was measured by the mortality of mosquitoes kept in sentinel cages set in different parts of the households and weekly follow-up of the number of mosquitoes and the presence of larvae. RESULTS There was an 80% reduction in mosquito density on the day after insecticide treatment for both insecticides. Mosquitoes became displaced from inside the houses to outside them after the insecticides had been applied. In spite of the insecticides' immediate impact, a maintained reduction in mosquito density throughout the 5 weeks' evaluation was not observed, probably due to the emergence of adults from deposits which had not been treated. CONCLUSION These insecticides showed higher than 80% efficacy in reducing A. aegypti mosquito density and they constitute an alternative for dengue control.

Water pH and active ingredient concentration are two of the most important variables to consider in the manufacturing process of fungicides. If these variables do not meet the required standards, the quality of the product may be compromised and lead to poor fungicide performance when water is used as the application carrier, which is in most cases. Given the correlation between the variable...
متن کاملField evaluation of cypermethrin and cyfluthrin against dengue vectors in a housing estate in Malaysia.
Cynoff 25ULV (cypermethrin 25 g/l) and Solfac UL015 (cyfluthrin 1.5% w/v) were evaluated against the sentinel sugar-fed adults and 4th-instar larvae of Aedes aegypti in a housing estate endemic of dengue in Malaysia. The impact of both pyrethroids on field populations of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti larvae was monitored weekly using bottle containers. Both Cynoff 25ULV and Solfac UL015 sh...
متن کاملEffect of Spatial Repellent Exposure on Dengue Vector Attraction to Oviposition Sites
BACKGROUND Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of dengue virus (DENV), the causative agent of dengue fever, an arthropod-borne disease of global importance. Although a vaccine has been recommended for prevention, current dengue prevention strategies rely on vector control. Recently, volatile pyrethroids-spatial repellents-have received interest as a novel delivery system for adult Ae. aegypti con...
متن کاملIncrimination of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) rangeli and An. (Nys.) oswaldoi as natural vectors of Plasmodium vivax in Southern Colombia.
Malaria transmission in the Southern Colombian state of Putumayo continues despite the absence of traditional vector species, except for the presence of Anopheles darlingi near the southeastern border with the state of Amazonas. In order to facilitate malaria vector incrimination in Putumayo, 2445 morphologically identified Anopheles females were tested for natural infection of Plasmodium vivax...

Three organophosphorus compounds- malathion, folithion and temephos- and two synthetic pyrethroids- alphamethrin and deltamethrin- were used for monitoring the susceptibility status of larvae and adults of six vector mosquito species: Culex quinquefasciatus (Filariasis) and Aedes albopictus (Dengue) (both laboratory and field strains); laboratory strains of Aedes aegypti (Dengue), Anopheles ste...
